"The heart of Shiatsu is like a mother's heart, pressure of the fingers causes the spring of life to flow."
Tokujirō Namikoshi

About Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese healing art rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). We view the body as a network of energy pathways called meridians.

We use rhythmic compression, deep pressure, rocking, tapotement, and stretching to regulate and unblock chi/qi flow along the body's meridians and acupressure points. We use our fingers, thumbs, palms, elbows, feet, and knees to perform these techniques. By using my bodyweight I can offer significant pressure for those looking for a full body deep tissue experience.

Shiatsu can help:

  • Relieve muscle tension and pain

  • Improve circulation and recovery

  • Support nervous system balance and regulation

  • Relieve stress, anxiety and emotional overwhelm

  • Improve flexibility and range of motion

What to expect in a session

Before

  • Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing that doesn't restrict the tissues or the flow of fluid and energy

  • Each session opens with somatic grounding and arriving together in the present moment.

  • Sessions are typically performed on a padded mat on the floor, and clients remain fully clothed.

  • For clients who cannot lay on the floor, we can adapt the session to the massage table.

During

  • If and when you feel ready and comfortable, you will get onto the mat face down with your clothes on. I have many pillows + blankets and a heat source to make you feel as comfortable as possible.

  • I will begin with compressions down your back and work my way all around the body. I will have you lay on your back and also maneuver you into side laying with pillows.

  • Any intense emotions or sensations that arise while on the table are welcome and will be received with deep care and reverence. All parts of you are welcome.

  • You will always be empowered to slow down or stop the session all together if that is what you are needing.

After

  • We take a moment to ground together vertically.

  • Most of the integration and processing takes place in the days or even weeks after a session.

  • I encourage you to pay attention to the lasting effects to be able to gauge what the ongoing use of this work might offer you.

  • I also encourage you to involve your regular therapist or other support resources in this process, if possible.
